BF BC2 Performance and Tweaking
Well, at this point I'm pretty sure all the BeerMe's that own the game have pretty modern hardware including GPU's. I gotta say the game has been pretty smooth on both my old GTX260 and my newer XFX rev2 HD5870.
First of all, if your NV get the latest drivers ( nvidia.com), and EVGA Precision (evga.com/precision), rivatuner, or similar. If ATI, get the latest drivers (ati.com), and MSI Afterburner, rivatuner, ati tray tools or similar.
But if you're having issues there are a few things you can do, firstly go into Options, Settings, Graphics, set to Advanced. A menu will come up on the RH side, disable HBAO first off unless you have some serious GPU grunt. Even a GTX260 will struggle with HBAO enabled, but it seems to have been improved a lot since beta. Really HBAO is a different way to cast lighting and shadows, along with shadow "depth" to make those things more realistic...it's very intensive and performance killing for what little visual differences it provides..especially in the heat of battle.
Also, one more thing to note, you can change any graphics setting from textures down to HBAO, to AA and AF without needing to restart the game, which is a big plus...can't recall a game that executed this as well as this one does.
If you're still getting crap performance, then tune down Anti Aliasing to 2X or 1X, and Anisotropic Filtering down to 4X or 1X. Anti Aliasing helps smooth jagged edges and 2X isn't really noticable..4X is but at the cost of performance. Aniso...blah blah blah filtering makes blurry textures at a distance sharper, and while it's not as detrimental on performance, most of you should be able to run 4X or 8X without much issue, though if you're squeezing out every last frame, these can go.
Then I would go next with textures, go from HI to medium, start with undergrowth, this seems to be the most recommended one to tune down first. Beyond that work the rest till you do OK, for any of you that played beta, all it had was Medium textures, and it still looked pretty damn good. So if in need of that extra bit of oomph, go to medium and suffer a little in graphics loss for what could be a healthy gain.
Beyond that, for ATI users, it is recommended to go into CCC and set Catalyst A.I. to High/Max. I actually just looked and mine was on normal this whole time, but I did set it to Max and I'll try and note here if I notice any changes. With DX11 we're supposed to get "free" 4XAA, now I cannot verify this as I still have AA at 4X in the game...but I don't think this game supports that part of DX11. If you are wondering what DX11 parts BC2 supports it's softening shadow edges and a couple "performance enhancements", but they never really clarified on what those really were. The Softening shadow edges I did notice, and I hear that's good for a 5-15FPS drop compared to DX10 at the same settings, depending on system build/oc/etc.
Now if none of that helps you out, then post in this thread and let us know what performance you're getting, if your system specs aren't up-to-date in your sig, please fix it or post your revised specs, driver version, OS, etc if possible. There are quite a few BC2 "performance" threads out there, and I've read thru a few and posted a few major solutions to performance issues, here's one worth a read:
http://www.fragcast.org/?p=433There are some settings.ini edits that can help too, like changing DX version to force 9. You'll get lesser overall image quality, but should reap a healthy gain in frames....though really noone on this clan currently playing (as of 3/5/10) should need to do this.
Another interesting edit is the FOV or Field of Vision. It's stock at 55, I did some reading and it seems about 65-70 is good for 16:10 an 16:9 monitors. I did change this the other night and almost forgot about it, but you can gain a little extra overall vision, though enemies will be a little smaller and harder to hit, though at 65-70 it's not a massive issue. Some people have gone up closer to 90-100 to really see more of what's left and right, but most hate it and back down to the 70's or so. It wouldn't hurt to try it, but eventually DICE claimed there will be a patch to add a slider in-game to adjust this on-the-fly. Alright, that's it for now, at least for GPU tuning to gain performance. cheers.
